How does a commission work?

Before going any further, please read the Terms of Service and proceed only if you agree to them.

1) Firstly just e-mail:
NeonGryphon@hotmail.co.uk
to ask for a commission (or price enquiry), outlining roughly what it is you would like. Please make sure you fill in the topic bar of your e-mail with something relevant e.g 'commission enquiry.'

2) If I'm available to do your commission, I will require the commission specifications. I do this by sending you a Question Sheet. When you fill it out you give me all the information I need. Please remember that you are responsible for communicating your concept, so be sure to supply as much relevant information at this stage as possible - picture references are as welcome as text. I will always draw to the very best of my ability and strive to create what it is you envision, so don't be afraid to be generous with reference material. Once I have this infomation, I will give you a final price and a rough date of completion.

3) If you're happy with everything discussed, then this is when I ask for payment. I now only start a commission once I have received your payment in full. If you would like to reserve yourself a commission opening then I must receive a deposit of half the commission value before I can confirm your reservation - To discourage time-wasters this deposit is non-refundable.

4 ) I will then e-mail a progress report including a URL link to a sketched draft of your image. At this stage you can ask for any alterations, but please be frugal with your requests. Remember it is the buyer’s responsibility to communicate the concept to the artist before work begins on the image – as such only three revisions to the image will be made. After that the commission may be rejected, or you may incur additional charges for further work. Please see my Terms of Service if you have not already.

Only once you're satisfied with the sketch will I continue to the next stage. Please be certain of your decision, since once the art is inked/coloured, alterations may be impossible. The URL I give you becomes your official way of keeping tabs on the work in progress - visit it regulalry to see updated images of your commission as it developes. Feel free to drop me emails with feedback regarding how you feel the commission is progressing. Communication from the buyer is encouraged throughtout the project.

5) When the illustration is completed I e-mail you a JPEG copy of the finished item. In the case of real media, I ship the original to you by post.Where digital art is concerned then a print or large file is supplied.

What do I get for my money?

All commissioners receive a jpeg file of their image to display on the internet to showcase art they’ve commissioned, as part of a RPG profile or other similar project. This is for non-profit display only.

All commissioners may request an avatar cropped from their finished image. I will make these to any size specified. Usually one avatar for each figure in the image. This is free. Just ask.

Digital buyers will receive a large printable jpeg as standard, which they may make one print from at their leisure. For an additional $15 USD I will produce and post a high quality glossy print made from an uncompressed TIF file. These prints are sharp, detailed and lustrous. Default size 11.5 x 8 inches.

Real Media buyers will receive the original art in the post. Commission prices include all standard shipping. Again additional prints can be produced for $15 USD each.

All buyers receive a URL to their commission in progress. The link is regularly updated as the work progresses. I highly encourage all buyers to frequent the URL to keep tabs on their commission. Communication between buyer and artist is encouraged throughout.

All commissioners are given ample opportunity to approve line art and request any changes.

All commissioners are permitted up to three minor alterations to their line art free of charge.

Not included: The artist retains their copyright and reproduction rights to the material, releasing it only for the purpose of non-profit display as detailed above. To negotiate purchase of the copyright for any profitable display or publication, please contact the artist.

What affects the price?

Prices vary according to materials used, the number of figures requested in the illustration, if you want a background and the size of paper/canvas board you want it on.

What media may I choose from?

Either real media or digital.

* Real Media images are done on 9" x 12" or 8" x 11.5" heavyweight paper. Size depends on content and is picked according to the best potential results.

* Digital pieces are done in Photoshop 7.0 and CS2.

Prices increase with the addition of colour, background, extra characters and other complex details.

Mixed Media on Heavyweight paper.

I like to do full colour pieces in a variety of mixed media, simply because certain effects can only be achieved with certain types of media. In a commission piece were I’m paid to produce my best work, I like to harness all types of media, thus employ all my skills and colouring techniques. All coloured work will be a mixed media selection of watercolour, colour pencil, marker and acrylics, unless the buyer specifically requests otherwise. The size is 9" x 12" as standard.

Mixed Media on Canvas Board
I can work on various board sizes and prices vary accordingly.

12 x 10 inches canvas board
14 x 10 inches canvas board
14 x 12 inches canvas board
Please contact the artist for details on pricing for this option.

Digital commissions
Prices for digital commissions vary according to content. As standard I offer a very large JPEG copy of the finished commission e-mailed to the buyer, intended for non-public display only. In addition the buyer will also receive a small copyrighted JPEG version for public display on the internet. It is also possible to purchase an 8" x 11.5" inch high quality glossy print of the finished commission for just $15 extra. I produce all prints from an uncompressed TIF file of the original for optimum print quality.

What are the guide prices?

I like to calculate costs for commissions on an individual basis - but for my average costs, then the rough price-guide can be found below.

All prices can be converted into the following forms of accepted currency: dollar USD, UK pound sterling, dollar Candian, dollar Australian, Euro, Yen.

Converted prices may vary according to the current exchange rate. Please email the artist for a converted currency quote.

Actual Price May Vary Based on Complexity

As a rule, I hate blank backgrounds, so a colour figure without a specified complex backgound will get a FREE simple setting. But if you really want it on blank, please just say.

How do you ship your commissions?

Every commission is sealed in a plastic pocket to protect from damp. It is then placed into a double reinforced, oversized envelope to prevent bending, creasing or wear in transit.

Are you paying the shipping?

Yes, I pay standard shipping with all my commissions, though I recommend you purchase additional insurance. Standing shipping covers the following:

  • Standard international airmail
  • UK Royal Mail 1st class recorded delivery

Internationally signed for service available at $12 - additional service

Print prices include all standard shipping costs. If you would like the international signed for service, please state so when purchasing artwork.

What about tracking and insurance?

Postage within the UK always includes tracking and insurance as standard (Royal Mail recorded delivery, requires signature on receipt).

All international orders are shipped via regular international airmail – this is without insurance and tracking. I can not be held responsible for loss or damage of items in the post that do not have insurance cover. If you would like an item insured and signed for on delivery, then please request this before the item is shipped and pay the additional charge for the service.
